Wildlife sightings

Posted: Thursday, July 20th, 2006

By Mark Spagnolo (Keewatingbiker1) on Thursday, April 25, 2002 - 09:21 pm

On my way home to Keewatin from Nashwauk today I spotted a large flock of cormorants on the O'Brien Resevoir. They were bobbing on the waves, which were quite large due to the strong NW winds.

I also spotted a large pileated woodpecker along the side of the trail.

Walking sections of Mesabi Trail

Posted: Thursday, July 20th, 2006

The trail is 10-14 feet wide and can certainly accommodate both bikers and walkers. You may walk the trail without purchasing a wheel pass. If you are planning on biking, rollerblading etc. you do. I haven't heard of any complaints about sharing it with walkers -vs- bikers. Enjoy! :)

rollerskiing

Posted: Thursday, July 20th, 2006

I am a high school ski coach and my skiers are looking for a weekend rollerski adventure. I am wondering if the MT is suitable for rollerskiing. I understand some of it is hilly. Unsafe for intermediate level skiers? Are there campgrounds very near the trail?

I guess that would be up to the individual.....some areas of the trail are hilly, (up to 8% grade) with areas that have fairly sharp corners. There are campgrounds along the trail in various communities. For a listing of them call 877-637-2241 or email me with your name and address to:

winter use

Posted: Thursday, July 20th, 2006

According to Doug our Trail Manager, it is very pretty, calm and peaceful out there..........enjoy!!!!!!!!!

I've been on the trail 3 times so far this month. Not much activity since the temps dropped.

Too snowy to ride the bike and not quite enough snow yet for good sledding. Still need more snow, the rocks on the adjoining snowmobile trail are still hitting my skis and tunnel.

Saw a dog sled team on the trail Sunday afternoon running between the Mitchell Bridge area and Chisholm.

Scenery is great with all of the snow covered trees.

Keep moving all you wheeled folks see you in the spring. Larry

Most Scenic Parts Of The Trail

Posted: Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Looking to plan my first trip to the MT this summer sometime. I live in East Central MN, so want to know from those who have been there on their favorite spots and most scenic portions. I am thinking of starting out around Giants Ridge and working west unless I am told the west side is more scenic by Grand Rapids and go east. Can't do it all in one trip so I want to plan it right. Your thoughts are appreciated. :)

That's a tough one..........all areas have their unique qualities..... if I had to choose.......probably from Giant's Ridge going west. Enjoy!!

Most Scenic Parts Of The Trail

I have a few questions also. Since you live nearby the trail and use it. To go from Giants ridge to Grand Rapids, is it more of a 2 days trip or can you bike it in one long day. Im guessing its to scenic to just race through it. Im from Florida and will be coming up sometime between sept 15th and october 15th to bike that route. Is there any Hunting going on at that time and are the trails safe enough away from being shot at? Also Im fairly new to biking trails at that distance, so if you could recommend what type of bike would suit me, that would help out alot. Im 6'4 and 260lbs. SO I really dont know much about brands of bikes and what they offer. Thanks for your help!

You're coming right at the beginning of bird season, so yes, hunters will be out, but hasn't seem to have been a problem in the past, but to be safe I would wear blaze orange either on your head or upper body when in the woods during that time. Right about then will be peak "Fall Colors" season, check out a few of the pics on the website. It's awesome. As far as the trip goes, it depends upon how far you want to ride each day. It's probably close to 90 miles if you want to ride from the Ridge to the Rapids.
I guess as far as what type of bike to use, I would call a bike shop. ???

I think to ride that part of the trail in 2 days would be best. Will probable stay in hotel somewhere each night and then take the shuttle back to square one. Can someone recomend a bike shop between rapids and Ridge that I can deal with?

There's not many from Mt. Iron to the west.....but Mt. Iron has West Two Rivers, about two miles from the trail, Gilbert has Sherwood Forest and Vermillion Campground outside of Biwabik are very nice.

Mountain Biking?

Posted: Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Hey all.

I was wondering if there were any established mountain bike trails/singletrack in the mesabi trail area. I'm located over in Bemidji and was looking for some close alternatives for trail riding. Any info would be great. I know about the obvious simpson creek, sugar hills, etc. Just curious if there's runs located just off the pavement, so to speak.

Hi -

The only one I know of is in the Giant's Ridge area. You can contact Craig in the Bike Shop @ the Ridge at
800-688-7669 extension #3.

Mineview from the trail

Posted: Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Just below the Mineview in the sky as you are biking towards Gilbert you will see to your left one of the best views on the trail. Be ready for some winding hills just after the view and on the return from Gilbert back to Virginia you may need to break a bit to be safe for other bikers. 7/19/02
